Clear Your Clutter Once and for All

Clutter is one of those things that sneaks up on us without us even noticing. One minute it’s just a few bits on the sideboard, and the next it’s a couple of boxes in the spare room, and before we know it, the whole house seems to be packed with clutter, and we can’t even open a cupboard without something falling on us.

Of course, we keep telling ourselves that we’ll sort it out over the weekend, but the weekend comes and goes, and we start telling ourselves the same thing again, right?

Well, if you want to break the cycle and clear your clutter once and for all, here’s what to do:

Stop shuffling things around

Something that a lot of people do is move clutter from one place to another, thinking that they are actually making a difference, when all they are actually doing is moving the problem to another shelf or cupboard. It might feel productive, but really, it’s not, is it?

Instead, tackle one area properly. Empty it completely. Sort items into three piles: keep, donate, and dispose. Be honest with yourself. If you have not used something in years and it has no real sentimental value, it may be time to let it go.

This can feel pretty uncomfortable at times, but it really is necessary, so try to persevere.

Think bigger if you need to

Sometimes clutter is not just a few bits and pieces. It can be old furniture, broken appliances, or garden waste that has been sitting there for months. In those cases, small bin bags are not going to cut it.

Hiring a skip can make the process far easier. If you are wondering how big is a 4 yard skip? It is typically suitable for smaller clear-outs like a bathroom refit or a modest room declutter. Knowing roughly what size you need helps you avoid over- or under-ordering.

When you have the space to throw things away properly, you are far less likely to second-guess yourself.

Set clear boundaries

When you are decluttering, it is a really good idea to set clear boundaries so that the clutter does not build up again once it has gone. To this end, you should sit down and create some simple rules for your home. If something new comes in, something else goes out. Do not let paperwork pile up. Deal with the post and deliveries straight away.

Storage solutions can also be a good help, but only if you do not use them as an excuse to keep all of your stuff forevermore. The goal is not to hide clutter better. It is to reduce it altogether.

Make it manageable

Trying to declutter your whole house in one day is just not going to happen. You wil burnout and give up, so be sure to break it down into smaller, more manageable. One cupboard. One drawer. One room at a time.

Time to tackle the clutter once and for all?!
