Moving into a new place

Everything You Should Do When Moving Into A New Place

So, you’ve bought a new place! That’s super exciting, and now the real fun can begin. When moving into a new place, there are a whole load of things that you need to do to ensure that a) you’re comfortable there, and b) you’re safe there.

You might be thinking that everything is already okay and there’s not much for you to do – but chances are that you’re wrong. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at everything that you should do when you’re moving into a new place, so if you would like to find out more, feel free to read on.

Change The Locks

We’re going to kick things off by suggesting that you change the locks. We understand that this might seem like overkill, but realistically you do not know who has a key to your property. You don’t know who the previous owners gave a key to, you don’t know who gave them back and who never did etc, so it’s better to be safe than sorry here.

Ideally, you want to arrange it so that they can come to your property and change the locks the day that you move in. If you do some research online and look for an MLA approved locksmith in your area, and then see if they are able to make it on the day that you move in, we guarantee you that you’re going to feel so much safer than if you didn’t do this.

Ensure Your Old Property Is Empty

This one might seem obvious, but you would be flabbergasted at the number of people who don’t actually check their old property thoroughly because they’re stressed or because they have got too much on their mind. But, you need to. You need to go back through your old home and make sure that you haven’t left anything behind, especially anything that you want or need.

Do a walkthrough room by room, double checking in all the closets, cupboards and so on so that you can have peace of mind you’ve got it all.

If you’re worried that your brain is going to trick you into thinking you left something behind, take pictures of the empty rooms and spaces to remind yourself that you got it all. Having that peace of mind is important, so an hour of your day to make it happen isn’t too much to ask of yourself.

Deep Clean

Once you’re in your new place, you’re going to want to deep clean it. Chances are that the previous owner either cleaned it themselves or hired a professional to clean it, but you never really know for sure, and as such it’s important that you’re deep cleaning it yourself. Plus, for some reason, things don’t ever really feel clean until you have done it anyway.

Make sure that you go through every room and clean the floors, the walls, and really anything else that is there. If any blinds or curtains have been left behind for you, ensure that these are being cleaned well so that you don’t see dust all over the place.

You’re even going to need to get into those hard to reach areas like the dryer vents just to make sure that it’s all clean. The last thing that you want is a nasty surprise in a week or so when things aren’t working properly as there is a build up of muck and grime causing you hassle. It’s just nice to be somewhere clean at the end of the day, right?

Complete Any Repairs

Now that you’re in and you’re able to go through everything, you should be looking to see if there are any repairs that need completing. We know that you probably looked at this when you were viewing the property, and that the surveyor also would have looked for things that were in need of repair, but you never know what has happened between then and now.

So, you need to go looking to see if there is anything that you feel needs repairing. In some cases there will be repairs that you knew about, so they should be at the top of the list to get sorted asap.

Figure Out If You Want To Change Anything

When going on a walkthrough of the home, see what you would like to change about the space. Maybe it’s the fact that you want a new color? Maybe you want to add an extension as you feel as though the space would benefit from being opened up a little.

This is going to be your home now, your little safe haven, and you need it to be exactly what you want it to be. So, if there’s anything that you want to change, if you want to have a loft conversion completed, or if you just want to give the place a refresh, make sure you do it.

Arrange Your Items

Last but certainly not least, you need to make sure that you are arranging your items. In doing so, you can guarantee that you don’t have to worry about losing any of your items. Instead, you’ll be able to understand exactly where everything is when you are moving. This is a great way to reduce the level of stress that you might be feeling about the move.

You could even think about writing a list. With a full list, you can make sure that you can tick off each item as you are packaging them up. You’ll also be able to arrange the boxes based on different types and sizes of items. This means that you don’t have to worry about smaller things getting squashed or ruined during the moving process.

We hope this helps you understand everything you should do when you are moving to a new property. In doing so, you can make sure that you love the process of moving home and are ready to begin a new chapter in your life.
