What is KonMari all About?
The KonMari Method is an organization and decluttering method developed by Marie Kondo, a renowned tidying expert. Her book ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying’ was a huge success, and naturally, a Netflix show dedicated to it followed soon after, which again, turned out to be a huge success.
The method generally emphasizes decluttering in particular- whether it is your home, office or any other space you’d like to get more organised in. The decluttering, however, isn’t just your regular old-fashioned ‘I-don’t-use-it-anymore’ variety. It involves you having to hold or touch that particular item, feel if it truly brings joy to you, and then deciding whether it has to stay or not. For some, this idea may seem confusing, but for some others, it may be euphoric.
The KonMari Method doesn’t simply encourage you to toss out the things that you don’t need, declutter your space and eventually just arrange and organize what you’re left with. It attempts to help you bring into your life what you actually truly want and do the entire process more mindfully, thereby transforming your space into a place of serenity and inspiration.
How is it About Joy?
Thinking that the KonMari Method is just about decluttering and getting things organized would be the understatement of the year. Kondo doesn’t just believe that these organizational attempts could change you and the space around you, but affect you physically as well- to an extent that you’ll experience weight loss, improved skin health and so much more.
You’ll also be able to experience the importance of being more optimistic and mindful by practising this method.
Doing it Right
So how do you go about it and get started? Well, it is super simple. Select a space that you want to declutter, and start by holding or touching every item. Does the item spark joy inside of you? If it is a yes, put it into the yes pile, and if it does not, put it inside the no pile.
Now that you’re actually left with the stuff that truly matters to you, you will need to start with the organization part, which may be complex, but of course, you can just log into Netflix and get started. In fact, the folding techniques that Kondo suggests are pretty effective- they help you save space, make the items easily accessible and less likely to wrinkle too- so it is a win-win in many ways. All in all, the KonMari method attempts to bring more mindfulness, joy and organisation into your life, if not more!
