First Impressions Count, Even During A Home Move

If you’re moving house, then the chances are that you’re already pretty keen on the property you’re heading to. You’ve viewed it, jumped through endless hoops to secure it, and have likely spent the last few months thinking about it. But what happens if you finally get there to find that, for whatever reason, you get off on the wrong footing with your new home?

This happens more than you might think, highlighting that first impressions really do count, even for your home move. If you’re rushed, overwhelmed, or simply not prepared on the big day, there’s an especially high risk that your frustrations will leave you feeling a little flat. Add to that the empty rooms and mountain of work you might have in front of you, and it’s all too easy to get a new property ick that you struggle to shake.

Luckily, you can avoid this by approaching moving day in the following essential ways.

1 – Give Yourself Space in the Empty House

Moving day is a juggling act of timings, and it’s hard to say when, exactly, you’ll get the keys. As a result, most of us arrive at our new homes right alongside moving companies who have also been waiting for the all clear. This can result in a manic few hours that leave you with very little time to settle.

Buying yourself a little time in your new home before that mayhem begins is always worthwhile. Even just carving out an hour or so before movers arrive can give you the breathing space you need to settle without the bad feelings and frustrations that can arise as soon as the work begins.

2 – Have an Unpacking Plan in Place

No one’s expecting you to unpack an entire house on moving day, but note that you’ll find it far harder to settle without your home comforts on that first night. This is why you should also have a priority unpacking plan, which includes beds, bedding, kitchen essentials, and anything else that might help you to feel settled.

Try to pack these things in clearly labelled boxes, and talk this plan through with your removalists, who will then be able to keep these boxes accessible and positioned where you need them to avoid empty rooms and discomfort right off the bat.

3 – Plan Something on Your First Night

If you sit in an empty room on your first night, then you’re bound to start your journey in your new home badly. We’re not saying that you should host a housewarming party right away, and you probably won’t want to head out when you’ve just got here. But something simple like having a takeaway can be a great idea for your first evening.

This is a fun, communal activity that can help you to take a moment, come together, and talk through your first thoughts on a house that’ll automatically feel more comforting as a result. It’ll also save you from trying to navigate your new kitchen when you’ve got no food in, which has to be a win-win!
