Readying The Kitchen For A Growing Family
Your family is getting bigger and your home is going to need to accommodate. You might need to turn an office into another bedroom, rethink your bathroom situation, and even try to open up a larger living room, but one room you might not think about changing is the kitchen. Yet the kitchen is vital to family life, from sharing meals around the table to making sure you have all of the food you need for a family of however many you have. As such, here are some of the changes that you might not have thought much about, but you’re probably going to have to make.
Opening up more space
The most crucial aspect of changing your kitchen is to make sure that you have enough space to house and sit everyone. There are plenty of ways to maximize your floor space, such as removing a kitchen island, rearranging your kitchen work triangle, and even investing in furniture with slimmer profiles so that you can fit everyone in there. You might even be able to float some of the storage that’s currently on the ground, adding shelves or open cupboards so that you can have more space to fit, eat, and hang out as a family beneath them. Opening up the kitchen to the patio can help you extend your space even further, but it might not always be the most practical of solutions for the colder months of the year.
Rethink your storage needs
It’s not just that you’re going to need more space for everyone to sit and to exist in the kitchen, either. You’re also going to have to consider the fact that more mouths to feed means more food and might mean more dinnerware, including plates, cups, and utensils, as well. To that end, you might be able to improve storage space by, for instance, making use of vertical space that currently isn’t being used, whether it’s hanging cups on hooks from the wall or creating a spice rack to open up a little more space in the cupboards. Even appliances like a new fridge from Andi-Co can make a big difference. After all, you might need more chilled storage space for foods as well, meaning a new fridge might be necessary.
Don’t forget the mess
With more mouths to feed comes more food, more food prep and, as a result, usually more mess. As such, you might want to consider how much time you plan to spend cleaning up in the kitchen and make changes that fit that. For instance, switching out your floors for something like a vinyl floor from Polyflor can make it a lot easier to simply wipe up any spills and dust. Similarly, consider a new backsplash, new counters, and other surfaces that could be much easier to clean.
If you haven’t considered the changes that you might have to make to your kitchen to accommodate a growing family, then now is the time. The tips above can help you do just that.

Storage is a huge thing for us, we live in a small place and we’re always struggling with space.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in a small space but with the right storage you can make it feel so much better.

Don’t we all need more storage, even without a growing family?! The mess would definitely be an issue as the room will get more traffic and be used more x

Anything that helps keep things clean is a-okay in my book. We have a growing family here too, though now it’s grandkids for me. 🙂

I always think a cleaner would be nice but in the meantime I have a routine 😉

We have had to re-do our storage a few times, as the kids grew and started eating more! It’s really wild how much a kitchen could change over time.

I have thought exactly the same. I was overjoyed when I could get rid of the kids ‘plate and cups’ cupboard and use it for something else!

Kids naturally do come with a lot of clutter, at least we are past the days of toys bigger than the kids! x
