Green tips for an eco-friendly home

Families can do their part in reducing their carbon footprint by making changes at home to live in a more eco-friendly environment with these green tips. Anyone who wants to live in a healthy, environmentally-friendly home can make some simple changes in different areas of the home to achieve this goal.

Green the Outside of the Home

Don't use gas mowers

There are things families can do to make the outside of their homes more eco-friendly. Use a push mower instead of a gas-powered mower, because gas-powered mowers create pollution. Cut the grass with a push mower to help the environment and get a great workout. Stop warming up the car before driving it, and choose safer antifreeze. Stop using the ethylene-glycol antifreeze that can be harmful to pets. Instead, choose antifreeze made from propylene glycol.

Environmentally-Friendly Kitchens

Composting

Families can reduce their carbon footprint by making their kitchen eco-friendly. Always use green cleaning products that can be purchased at most grocery stores or families can make their own using household items. Use glass containers instead of plastic. When reheating food, chemicals in the plastic break down and they’re absorbed in the food.

Make sure to clean the refrigerator coils every six months to ensure it runs efficiently, and only run the dishwasher when it’s full to save water and electricity. Start composting to reduce trash. Use the compost to feed houseplants and a garden. Stop buying paper towels. Instead, get a few cute kitchen towels to use on a regular basis. Just pop them in the laundry with the other clothes each week to clean them.

Eco-Friendly Living Room Makeover

Living Room

Take a few steps to make the living room eco-friendly. Use the drapes in the house to their full advantage. Close them at night during the winter to keep heat in and open the drapes on windows that get a lot of sunlight during the day to utilize free heat. Buy LCD instead of plasma televisions to save money, electricity, and the amount of carbon that’s released while enjoying the television. Use sustainable wood when building fires during the winter.

Promote Sustainable Living with a Green Bathroom

Bathroom

If a family has any leaky faucets, they should get them fixed as soon as possible, because one leak can waste hundreds of gallons of water each year. Use green cleaning products when cleaning the bathroom, and use recycled glass jars to make the bathroom more organized. When a family is done with a jelly jar or pasta sauce jar, they can rinse it out and use them to hold cotton balls, bobby pins, and other bathroom items. Use eco-friendly towels and recycled toilet paper.

Make the Bedroom Eco-Friendly

Bedroom

Turn off all lights when they’re not in use. Unplug all electronics, because they continue to drain energy when plugged in even if they are not on. Also, try to use eco-friendly paints to reduce pollution indoors and smog outside. When buying new sheets, stick with ones made out of organic cotton or bamboo.

Families can reduce their carbon footprints by making simple changes in their kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms. Take one step at a time to live a more environmentally-friendly life.
